Tens of thousands of protesters in Iran rallied to mark the 40th day of classical Islamic mourning for Mahsa Amini, whose death in police custody sparked nationwide protests.
The grief was marred by violence as security forces attacked and fired on protesters across the country. By the evening, protests had spread across the country to many cities and university campuses, with giant crowds in the streets applauding and defiantly chanting the protests’ mantras: “Women, life, freedom” and “We will fight and take back Iran,” according to videos on social media.
