It’s Northwest Washington’s best-kept secret, with over a hundred rooms and more than 70 secret doors and passageways. In this edition of “Matt About Town,” WTOP’s Matt Kaufax takes us to Dupont Circle to explore the mansion on O Street.
“The O,” as it’s called, is made up of five interconnected houses, and Pocket tells a story.
Tracy Halliday, the mansion’s executive vice president of marketing and sales, said the mansion was remodeled to the charm seen today by founder H. H. Leonards in 1980.
“We’re a museum, we’re a space for special occasions and we’re a hotel,” he said.
But, as Matt noted, there’s a lot more than meets the eye, and a lot to notice (without a map!), if you’re willing to search and explore. In many secret passages you can see mirrors, vending machines, and even picture frames. It’s like being at Hogwarts!
Watch a video of his in-depth tour, where he got lost, but discovered himself!
The Manor will be pulling out all the stops for the holiday season, and special occasions are approaching. For more highlights and to get tickets, you can visit The Mansion website.

If there’s one kind of unusual attraction, person, or phenomenon in Washington’s domain that you think other people deserve to know about, Matt is your man. As a WTOP reporter, he’s on the lookout for stories that provide an upscale local flavor — a slice of life, so to speak.
