Tensions between Africa and the International Boxing Association (IBA) appear to be rising as rival framework World Boxing has announced that Nigeria is the continent’s first member country.
Finland, Iceland, Jamaica, Norway and the Czech Republic register the African country as new members of World Boxing.
This brings the total to 22 members, as the new framework will be held at its inaugural congress in Frankfurt on 24 and 25 November.
The Confederation of African Boxing (AFBC) was due to elect a new president at its ordinary congress to succeed Bertrand Mendouga this month in Durban, but it was postponed due to a dispute over the list of candidates.
While the AFBC later announced that it would hold elections on November 18 in Africa, IBA, its continental member, will hold them in Dubai.
This led to an awkward situation, with the IBA threatening not to cover the prices of the congress if it was held in Africa.
IBA President Umar Kremlev has so far enjoyed the wonder of Africa, but Nigeria’s departure may be just the beginning of a mass exodus.
However, the Asian Boxing Confederation recently said it would resist the Russian-led framework until World Boxing gains popularity before the International Olympic Committee.
“We are excited to welcome this new group of National Federations and to strengthen World Boxing’s global footprint, which now has members on every continent in foreign boxing,” said World Boxing Secretary General Simon Toulson.
“It is clear from the comments made in its recent consultation that the IOC regards boxing as a game and needs it to remain a component of the Olympic programme and that the only way to achieve this is for the National Federations to engage with a new foreign federation. “integrity, transparency and strong governance standards.
“World Boxing is the only organization that can achieve this and the stable expansion of our club, as well as the continued interest we are receiving from National Federations on all continents, is a transparent sign of the development of World Boxing and the widespread preference to replace it. that exists. through sport.
“We continue to implement programs from clubs around the world and look forward to welcoming more countries to be part of World Boxing ahead of our inaugural congress. “
insidethegames has reached out to the IBA for comment.
Boxing’s long history looks bleak, with the expelled IBA stripped of its right to host the Olympic boxing tournament, leaving the sport to fight during its long run at Los Angeles 2028.
The IBA appealed his expulsion and the case will be heard before the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in November.
While IOC Director General Christophe De Kepper had previously said that boxing would be based in Los Angeles, there are doubts due to the lack of a credible organization to reposition the IBA.
IOC President Thomas Bach warned that World Boxing “has enough global representation” to update the IBA.
