Workers at a production plant in the central Chinese city of Zhengzhou appear to have left for COVID-19 restrictions, with many traveling on foot for days after an unknown number of workers were quarantined at the facility following a virus outbreak.
Videos circulating on Chinese social media platforms showed others believed to be Foxconn staff members using their belongings on the road.
Foxconn’s Zhengzhou plant in Henan province is one of China’s largest factories assembling for Apple Inc. , adding its newest iPhone 14 devices.
Not all videos featuring staff expected to leave the facility can be verified. It is known whether the staff who left the facility escaped or were allowed to leave.
Foxconn did not respond to a request for comment.

Volunteers from nearby villages distributed food and drink to Foxconn workers. One of the volunteers, who asked to be known only by his surname Zhang for privacy, was in charge of distributing the materials that his village in Xingyang County had prepared. He said the other people shown in a video he uploaded to the Douyin short video platform were Foxconn workers, as they would have to take that address if they left the facility.
The exodus comes after reports that Foxconn had quarantined several following a COVID-19 outbreak at the plant.
Foxconn’s factory in Zhengzhou can hold up to 350,000 workers, but it is known how many were hired lately through the factory. It’s also unclear how many of them left or how many were affected by the factory’s COVID-19 restrictions. before they left.
Earlier this week, media reported that a “closed loop” formula had been implemented at the plant, largely restricting staff between their homes and the factory.
Local media reported that Foxconn staff complained about poor food quality and lack of medical care for those who tested positive amid growing concerns about the spread of the infection. The company also denied rumors that another 20,000 people at the plant were infected with COVID-19. .
Since then, cities near Zhengzhou have suggested to Foxconn staff that they inform the local government if they plan to return to their place so they can go through proper isolation measures.
According to posts on the Zhengzhou government’s public WeChat account, Foxconn issued notices to its factory staff on Sunday, pledging to ensure the safety, valid rights and source of income for those who wish to stay.
A day after videos of staff leaving the factory aired, Foxconn and several local governments also arranged transportation for staff deciding to return home. It is unclear to what extent the staff will leave the factory.
Foxconn’s exit from the Zhengzhou plant highlights growing discontent with China’s “COVID zero” strategy, where governments seek to eliminate outbreaks by implementing strict isolation and lockdown measures where infections are detected.
