The Brazilian Association for the Support of Laois, LABRAS, has the Social Inclusion Award at the Laois Community and Volunteering Awards 2023.
Judge Mags Whelan of the Kilkenny Public Participation Network said Labras had demonstrated exemplary integration into the wider community. He said the organization works collaboratively with other teams and agencies.
“They work with the most vulnerable and marginalized. An example of progression and integration of netpaintings.
“Good to them and good to all the candidates,” Whelan said.
The organisation won a Galway crystal plaque and a €500 cash prize from Laois’ Cathaoirleach County Council, Cllr Paschal McEvoy.
The finalists are the organisers of Laois Pride. Laois County Council Chief Executive John Mulholland presented them with a cash prize of €250. MORE IMAGE BELOW
The Social Inclusion Award recognises teams and organisations that actively play a supporting role within their communities and aim to minimise social exclusion and/or contribute to the quality of life of socially excluded groups.
The award is sponsored through People First Credit Union and the Laois Partnership, which offer a diversity of rural, social and economic systems in the local Laois County.
Here is the full list of applicants in the Social Inclusion segment who also earned the certificate for their contribution to their community.
The award will be presented at a gala reception at the Midlands Park Hotel on Friday 3 November.
This is the fourteenth year of awards organized through the Laois County Council in partnership with the Laois Public Engagement Network and through People First Credit Union.
Here are the profiles of the nominees in the Social Inclusion Award category.
Coach House Residents Association: Coach House is a newly created two-bedroom, 40-component construction that provides housing for seniors. The allocation was launched in January 2023, and once fully occupied, citizens temporarily established their citizens’ committee. A few gardeners willing to live in the shed. The grounds are well maintained and the citizens take pride in keeping their network in good shape, by carrying out normal cleanings. As a senior housing program, many citizens live alone. By having a citizens’ committee, it gives citizens a sense of belonging, it allows all citizens to participate, meet new people and participate in new things.
Laois Africa Support Group: Laois Africa is noted for its work to raise awareness about hard-to-succeed communities by hosting many fun family gatherings. They were able to reach out to other minorities and encouraged them to find representation in the community. This organization is constantly involved in local events in the city. They offer wraparound services to Americans and families in communities. I have been organizing Africa Day with Laois County Council for over five years. They work tirelessly with the Laois. PPN, Laois City Council, Gardai, Irish Aid, Department for Children and Youth. They have been nominated several times for the Social Inclusion Awards. They organized various cultural and intercultural events.
Laois Pride: Laois Pride in partnership with the Midlands LGBT Project is an organisation that started in April 2022 with the first Annual General Meeting taking place on 17 May 2022. The first Laois Pride took place in September 2022 with a week of events culminating in a family parade and a day of laughter with stalls, the night ended with a drag exhibition for those 18 and older. Laois Pride is an all-volunteer organization that relies on donations, sponsorship, and laughter to keep going. Pride provides an important service to LGBT people in Laois who have never seen any form of representation develop in their county. The positive reaction and turnout at Laois Pride last year was astounding. Many other people who live in Laois or who in the past stated that they never expected to see anything like this in their lives or notice the progress that Laois has made in terms of acceptance in such an area. In a short period of time.
Midlands LGBT Project: Established in 2021, the Midlands LGBT Project is a service that provides an opportunity for connection and friendship progression within the LGBT network. They also provide education to the wider network on LGBT terminology, sharing what the LGBT community revels in. about and creating inclusive spaces for all. The activities of those social teams are set up through members each month and include activities such as bowling, roller skating, board games, pole dancing, yoga, kayaking, and much more.
Association of the Midlands of Ukraine: The Association of the Midlands of Ukraine/MUA is an organization whose main responsibilities are to meet the cultural, humanitarian and educational wishes of Ukrainians living in Ireland and abroad. The MUA unites Ukrainians and promotes their progress in Irish society. The MUA has charitable and objective goals, especially in this era of the invasion of Ukraine by the Russian army. The Ukrainian Midlands Association has made vital paintings with around 30 painting events, activities and workshops a year to help retirees, young people and teenagers. There is no such user in Laois, who is engaged in so many other activities, voluntary paintings to help people’s intellectual state, and physical and intellectual help for all ages.
Labras – Brazilian Laois Support Association: They created the organization during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020 and have since worked hard to unite other people through a variety of activities. They met and interacted with many other people and got a lot of help from network members. They have effectively organized six major events for the network, but have also collaborated with other groups across the county and country. They have earned fair feedback from other people who have attended their events and/or activities; As Brazilian immigrants, they feel that Labras promotes Brazilian culture and this has been appreciated by other Laois. Brazilian families are also very happy that their Irish-born children can participate in cultural activities and believe that they have a great emotional impact on their family members. They also held craft meetings every week for four months and other people who attended said it was very beneficial for their health and intellectual well-being, and they were also able to make new friends and create connections with members of the organization; The mothers and youth organization also proved to be an ideal place for socialization.
Borris-in-Ossory Social Service: they will offer free recreational activities; The network is looking ahead to the many activities it will offer. They will offer activities such as music, singing, dancing, socializing, and bingo for older members and anyone who needs to participate. Through their services, they bring joy and happiness and quality of life to seniors in their area.
Portlaoise Family and Community Resource Center: The Portlaoise Family and Community Resource Center (CFRC) was established in 2004 thanks to local people who formed a voluntary steering committee to direct the organization’s work. The members of the Management Committee remain Americans from the netpaintings of Knockmay and Portlaoise, who lead the art, governance, and oversight of the art. The domain was first centred on the communities of Knockmay, but has expanded over the years to cover the whole of Portlaoise and its landscape and part of the wider whole. Over the years, this member and previous Board members have generously donated their time and demonstrated their commitment to achieving their vision of “Supporting Resilient Families – Building a Resilient Community. “
Clough ICA: They’ve been around since 1955, and that’s great for their older members, who may not have too many jobs to do. Their meetings are held monthly, and members look forward to meetings. They have been the lifeline of communities over the years, helping to organize various parties and other special occasions.
Laois Integration Network: LIN was established in March 2016 through Doras and Karen McHugh as a component of the first Syrian resettlement program in Laois. LIN is run by volunteers and is the only interagency forum in Laois County that focuses specifically on migrant integration. with representatives of statutory, voluntary and networked organizations; It is home to the local immigrant and Irish communities and currently has 40 members. The organization continually reviews its composition to ensure that it reflects and accompanies all stakeholders in Laois County and emerging immigrant organizations.
Rathdowney Community Development Group: The Rathdowney Community Development Group identifies and implements projects for the overall improvement of the City of Rathdowney. The main accomplishment of this organization is the Rathdowney Community Garden. In 2018, the Rathdowney Community Development Group learned of an overgrown, unused site. in the city centre as a request for improvement. RCDG considered that this site may just be a network space, but that it just needed to be imagined and remodeled to gain advantages for all.
The Minority Youth Voice Group: This organization includes young people from diverse ethnic minority backgrounds who have used their voices locally and nationally to make sure others like them are heard and constituted. This is an incredibly motivated, hardworking, and inspiring organization. of other young people. They take every opportunity to get involved in the community, improve themselves, and also be a voice for other young people like them. They are leaders among their peers and receiving an award like this would mean a lot to them. They are the definition of resilient.
Fáilte Isteach Portarlington: Fáilte Isteach Portarlington is a community task involving mostly older volunteers who welcome immigrants through conversational English classes. Since its inception in November 2018, Failte Isteach Portarlington has expanded beyond its original mandate to offer English language courses. The organization provides a space for those who are isolated to connect and get to know each other in their new locality. Over the years, volunteer tutors have helped students beyond the classroom: helping them send children to school, scheduling medical appointments, finding jobs, advocating on their behalf with immigration services, and much more. There wouldn’t be enough space here to mention all the acts of kindness that Portarlington tutors provide to their students.
