CHICAGO, Nov. 17, 2023 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — The COVID-19 Historic Landmarks Commission announces the winner of its global design festival for the COVID-19 Monument of Honor, Remembrance and Resilience, scheduled to open in spring 2025 in Chicago. Illinois. . Casey Schachner, an assistant professor of art in the Betty Foy Sanders Department of Art at Georgia Southern University, won the $20,000 prize. His sculptural concept features the dandelion flower as a metaphor for the experience of the global pandemic. Visually, it refers to the aesthetic affinity of the star dandelion with the CDC’s official depictions of the COVID-19 virus. Metaphysically, his vision embodies good looks through ashes, rebirth, hope, and resilience—the foundational sentiments the Commission set out to represent.
Professor Schachner earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Sculpture from Baylor University and his Master of Fine Arts in Studio Art from the University of Montana. He exhibits his paintings domestically and abroad, from site-specific transient installations to permanent public art paintings. In 2011, he was an artist in an apartment at the Lamar Dodd School of Art at the University of Georgia in Cortona, Italy and in 2012, as an artist in an apartment at the Carving Studio
The festival ran from April to September this year and was open to everyone, anywhere in the world, over the age of 18. A strong crusade on social media encouraged the citizens of the world to participate, as stated by the President of the Commission, Dr. Ann Sullivan. Sally Metzler: “The pandemic has affected us all; It’s one hundred percent inclusive. Every citizen, nation, race, and faith has experienced the pandemic. Whether it’s a lockdown at best productive or a loss of life or the loss of a person enjoyed at worst, COVID-19 hasn’t left one unscathed.
The Illinois Medical District (IMD) (https://medicaldistrict. org/), a 560-acre special-use urban zoning domain in Chicago, has generously donated the land for the monument, which will feature a park in harmony with nature. Dandelion Monument Theme. It will invite everyone to reflect on the pandemic as a collective and individual experience. The park will pay tribute to frontline staff from all walks of life and those who have lost their lives in the scourge of the pandemic.
With more than two hundred varied species, dandelions grow all over the world. Thus, the familiarity of the flower, concomitant with the folklore of blowing on a dandelion to grant a wish, engenders the appeal of Schachner’s design. The ubiquity of dandelion embodies universality and inclusivity. Allyson Hanson, executive director and CEO of IMD, cited her enthusiasm for Schachner’s visual design and the respected medicinal qualities of dandelion, as IMD is home to four top-tier hospitals in addition to more than 40 clinical and healthcare study facilities.
Metzler emphasized the dual nature of the COVID-19 memorial, that of a strong physical and virtual presence. Funding the memorial is a grassroots effort, and the volunteer-led Commission encourages everyone around the world to donate what they can, even $10 will do. A difference, directly through the web: (https://covidmemorialmonument. org/). Corporate sponsorships will ensure global popularity at the memorial and on the web, providing a virtual platform for the global pandemic to revel in in perpetuity.
For those who perished, for those who lost someone they enjoyed, for those who recovered, and for those who served bravely and selflessly in the darkest and most dubious days of the pandemic, the COVID-19 memorial will mark an occasion. in history.
