In March, as infections began to rise in India, the Indian government halted major exports of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine.
This included vaccines for the UN-backed Covax program to supply doses to low- and middle-income countries. On Monday, the Global Vaccine Alliance (Gavi), one of the project’s partners, said it was waiting to hear when India’s materials would resume. .
In fact, this will have an effect on the vaccination rollout in many countries. But that means more vaccines are being diverted from India for domestic use, as the country tries to ramp up production.
And given India’s dire situation, scientists say it’s a priority.
“We actually want to double down on our vaccination efforts as temporarily as possible, in a different way, the virus will do everything we can to keep spreading from one user to another,” Swaminathan says.
Globally, the pandemic shows no signs of abating, and the virus is ravaging country after country.
The situation in India is a sad reminder that none of us will be until all of us are.
