A new hike in northern Italy will take hikers between two UNESCO World Heritage-listed urban centers to celebrate their difference as the Capital of Culture of 2023.
The cities of Bergamo and Brescia are sharing the title, a homage to their recovery after being two of the worst-hit zones during the coronavirus pandemic.
The new cultural “cammino” will link the two historic sites in a 130-kilometer direction that winds along winery slopes, nature reserves and a beautiful lake.
The move is part of Italy’s efforts to promote slower and more sustainable tourism, which helps keep visitors away from crowded places.
The new address was inaugurated on April 10, 2023 and connects two of the UNESCO sites in northern Italy, in the cities of Bergamo and Brescia.
The two-way street connects the ancient Città Alta in Bergamo with the monastery of Santa Giulia in Brescia.
The 130-kilometre route has been designed in several stages and can be completed in about six days.
New signs have been installed to make the promenade available smoothly and the online page points to a diversity of hotels along the way.
Hikers trek through mountainous landscapes and add vineyards in the brilliant Franciacorta aged method.
You can avoid it at Lago d’Iseo, a lake in northern Italy that is less visited but no less attractive. If you have a little more time, hop on a ferry to the middle island for a meditative ascent to a shrine at the top.
The path also passes through the Mompiano Valley, which already attracts culturally concerned walkers with its art installations spread along the ArteValle route. To honor their inclusion on the new trail, more artwork will be added this year.
Elsewhere along the route, new works of fresh art explore the relationship between man and nature. Look for soft installations, sculptures, and extensive textile works.
Land art activities will also be discovered along the trail, encouraging hikers to participate in art workshops.
