Africa has escaped the “exponential” accumulation of coronavirus cases seen probably due to low population density and warm, humid weather, the UN fitness firm said.
Africa recorded 34,706 deaths of 1,439,657 cases of COVID-19, according to an AFP count on Friday, on many other continents. The United States alone has 202,827 deaths out of 6,979,937 cases.
“Covid-19 transmission in Africa has been marked by fewer infections that have declined in the past two months,” the World Health Organization said in a French statement from its regional workplace in Congo’s capital Brazzaville.
“In the last 4 weeks there have been 77,147 new instances at 131,647 in the last 4 weeks,” the statement said, won through AFP on Friday.
WHO said some of the most affected countries, such as Algeria, Cameroon, Ethiopia, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Kenya, Madagascar, Nigeria, Senegal and South Africa, have noticed a decrease in infections in the following two months.
South Africa is the continent’s hardest hit country, according to Friday’s latest official statistics, there are 667,049 cases, of which 16,283 are fatal.
WHO said that “low population density, warm and humid weather, highest point, and highest percentage of other young people combined” are likely to contribute to low infection rates.
“Approximately 91% of infections in sub-Saharan Africa occurred in other people under the age of 60 and more than 80% of those cases were asymptomatic,” he said.
The decline reflects the decisive public aptitude measures taken by all governments in the region, WHO Director for Africa Matshidiso Moeti said at a virtual assembly on Thursday.
South Africa, the continent’s largest industrialized economy, closed its borders at the start of a strict national blockade on 27 March to restrict the spread of the virus.
Movement and business restrictions have been gradually eased since June, however, borders have remained sealed for the burden of the virus from abroad.
