Among the benefits are enhanced pharmaceutical quality and increased global recognition for medicines manufactured in Nigeria, said NAFDAC DG Adeyeye.
Among them are a breakthrough in pharmaceutical quality and increased global popularity of drugs made in Nigeria, said Adeyeye, director general of NAFDAC.
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) said the World Health Organization has granted prequalification to the Central Drug Control Laboratory (CDCL), Yaba, in Lagos State, Nigeria.
Announcing the new milestone at a press conference in Abuja, NAFDAC Director General Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, said: “We are very pleased to announce a momentous achievement for the Central Drug Control Laboratory (CDCL) in Yaba, Lagos State, Nigeria. The World Health Organization (WHO) has officially awarded the WHO prequalification prestige to the CDCL, marking a milestone in its commitment to ensure the protection and quality of pharmaceutical products.
“This was communicated to us through the email received from the WHO Prequalification Inspection Team on Friday, September 15, 2023.
“This fate came despite everything posted on the WHO website last week and the address of the online page through which the public can quote and reference it was shared with us for dissemination to the general public. “
He said that among the keys to the WHO’s prequalification of the laboratory are higher pharmaceutical quality and increased global popularity of medicines made in Nigeria.
She said the WHO prequalification status confers globally recognition badge of honour that attests to the CDCL’s competence in assuring the quality of pharmaceutical products.
He said the popularity also places CDCL among an elite organization of laboratories known for their excellence in drug testing.
“This is a huge landmark achievement for the Agency and Nigeria. Very few laboratories in the world have the apex status of WHO pre-qualification,” she said.
Adeyeye said the WHO prequalification of the CDCL was a testament to the unwavering commitment of NAFDAC to meeting international standards of excellence in drug quality control and regulation.
According to her, this popularity brings many closer to the CDCL, NAFDAC and the Nigerian people.
Adeyeye extra indexed some of the keys to WHO prequalification in Nigeria, including: global recognition, increased foreign collaboration, advancing public health, and simplifying regulatory processes in the country.
For example, the Director-General said that CDCL prequalification will ensure that the quality, safety and efficacy of drugs tested and qualified through the laboratory meet the highest foreign standards.
