March 18, 2023: The head of the World Health Organization said Friday that he expects the organization to call for an end to the COVID-19 pandemic later this year as statistics on the virus continue to fall.
“I am confident that this year we will be able to say that COVID-19 has ended as a public health emergency of foreign concern,” WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told reporters at a briefing in Geneva.
For the first time, the weekly number of COVID deaths reported over a four-week period decreased compared to when the WHO declared COVID a global pandemic 3 years ago.
“In fact, we are in a much better position now than at any point in the pandemic,” Ghebreyesus said.
In January, Ghebreyesus said the pandemic is most likely at “a transition point,” meaning public fitness measures could be further defused.

According to a CDC chart, there were 1706 weekly deaths through March 15 of this year. This is the lowest number of weekly deaths since March 25, 2020, when there were 1119.
Another pause occurred when weekly deaths fell to 1717 on July 7, 2021. The number of weekly deaths occurred on January 13, 2021, when there were more than 23,000.
Reported COVID hospitalizations have also declined, with 2636 admissions in total during the week ending March 15. Hospitalizations decreased slightly in June 2021 and April 2022.
