The World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) congratulated Nigeria on its declared polio-free
The WHO Regional Office for Africa in Brazzaville, Congo, revealed this on its website.
The Independent African Regional Certification Commission (ARCC) for Polio Eradication officially stated Tuesday that the WHO African Region is polio-free.
He said that while UN agencies criticized Nigeria for its status, they were under pressure that taking this step was not the end of work: all young people under the age of five will have to continue to vaccinate against vaccine-preventable diseases.
This is especially to reduce saveable mortality among young Nigerians under the age of five, prevent polio from permanently entering Nigeria, and ensure greater fitness and well-being for long-term generations.
Noted agencies also congratulated their fellow associates in the Global Poliomyelitis Eradication Initiative (GPEI) in Nigeria who have contributed to this goal: Rotary International; Centers for Disease Control (CDC).
They also praised the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI), as well as Nigerian classics and leaders and volunteer network mobilizers as infantrymen who fought to free young Nigerians from wild poliovirus.
Dr Walter Mulumbo, WHO Representative for Nigeria, said: “WHO welcomes others and the Nigerian government and recognizes that wild polio certification is undoubtedly the most productive public health. “
“He recognizes that certification is the greatest triumph in the annals of Nigeria and even Africa, which will bequeath to posterity the classes learned and practices to address long-term public conditioning interventions. “
Both UN agencies expressed deep appreciation for the role played across all stakeholders, in particular Nigerian engagement and government at all levels, progression partners, donors, classical and network leaders, fitness staff and caregivers.
“This step is a transparent call to urgently reallocate resources to prevent transmission of all types of poliovirus, to govern immunization to aid progress, i. e. in high-risk spaces and classic polio sanctuaries, and to maintain high-quality surveillance. “
Similarly, unICEF Representative in Nigeria Peter Hawkins said: “This is an important achievement that requires celebration.
“This historic achievement not only means an end to wild poliovirus across the African continent, but is also a springboard to global polio eradication.
“UNICEF joins Nigeria in celebrating this vital milestone, and in particular to congratulate Nigeria’s young people, but we must not forget that the paintings are not finished,” Hawkins said.
“All caregivers will need to continue to vaccinate their youth as opposed to vaccine-preventable diseases during training years, adding polio.
“Religious and network leaders, as advocates for the eradication of wild poliovirus, continue to mobilize caregivers to serve their youth against all preventable diseases. Children want their help more than ever,” Hawkins added.
Hawkins added that not only is polio vaccination still crucial, but all vaccination regimens are also for children’s survival.
“We will need to combine all paints to regulate immunization facilities and ensure that all children under the age of five get all vaccines, adding the polio vaccine.
“This is not the time for Nigeria to leave the accelerator. The time has come for Nigeria to use its number one formula for fitness care and provide a major boost to the immunization regimen. “
UNICEF and WHO are committed to helping Nigeria with its number one formula for health care as a component of the federal government’s Primary Indoor Health Care (PHCUR) policy, adding the purpose of having at least one number one functional health care center (PHS). in each and every neighborhood of Nigeria.
Nigeria has been given the prestige free of wild polio after meeting all certification criteria, which come with 3 years of non-detection of any wild poliovirus cases in the country.
Prior to certification, Nigeria, Afghanistan and Pakistan were the endemic countries of wild polio in the world.
