President Joe Biden will invoke a law passed during the Cold War, the White House announced Monday, to bolster American supply chains and help domestic production ahead of the 2024 presidential election. The Defense Production Act of 1950, Enacted in reaction to the outbreak of the Korean War, it provides the executive branch with the force to compel American corporations to assist projects in the interest of national security. It has been reauthorized more than 50 times since its initial adoption, with periodic amendments, and was used during the height of the COVID-19 Pandemic. This time, the goal will be to invest in “domestic production of essential medicines” and alleviate drug shortages, the White House said in a press release. The Department of Health and Human Services, which has broad authority to authorize investments under the order, has “identified $35 million for investments in domestic production of key raw materials” for the project, the White House said.
