The search for a missing Titanic tourist submersible, carrying five people, ended Thursday when authorities found wreckage near the Titanic wreck site and decided it had suffered a “catastrophic implosion. “
Titan debris discovered on the seafloor about 1,600 feet from the Titanic’s bow, Rear Adm. John Mauger, commander of the Coast Guard’s First District, said at a news convention Thursday, adding that it’s too early to say when the Titan imploded.
The U. S. Coast Guard The U. S. Department of Homeland Security in Boston was involved in the search for the missing submersible, which was reportedly reported defeated Sunday night about 435 miles south of St. John’s, Newfoundland, said the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
The Coast Guard used equipment ranging from sonar generation to aircraft to conduct underwater and ocean surface searches. The location of the operation, about 900 miles east of Cape Cod and up to 13,000 feet deep, complicates the task.

On April 14, 1912, the Titanic collided with an iceberg in the North Atlantic Ocean on its maiden voyage from Southampton, England, to New York. On April 15, around 2:20 a. m. , the ship sank.
The 21-foot submersible is heading toward the Titanic’s wreck site, which lies about 2. 4 miles below the surface.
The vessel departed St. John’s on June 16 and lost contact with the vessel following it approximately one hour and forty-five minutes later. The stopover on the boat takes two hours.

The Titanic is located about 370 miles off Newfoundland, Canada, in the Atlantic Ocean.
This was OceanGate Expeditions’ third annual visit to the wreck site. The Coast Guard said there was a pilot and 4 other people on board who paid to accompany the expedition.
British businessman Hamish Harding, who holds three Guinness World Records, is one of the other people on board, according to Action Aviation, a company of which Harding is chairman.
Shahzada Dawood and his son Suleman, members of one of Pakistan’s most prominent families, were also on board, according to a circle of relatives sent to the AP.
French explorer and Titanic expert Paul-Henry Nargeolet is also on board, according to David Gallo, senior advisor for strategic projects and special projects at RMS Titanic.
OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush has been shown as the fifth passenger in the submersible’s crew, The Associated Press reported.
