It has long been known that humanitarian agencies have a duty to ensure that others in crisis have access to reliable information; help them participate in the decisions they make; and be accountable to the communities they seek to serve. The Joint Service for Community Participation and Accountability has been working to achieve this since 2017, when the Rohingya refugee crisis began in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh.

The existing members of the joint facilities consortium, BBC Media Action and Translators Without Borders (TWB), aim to help agencies and sectors targeting Rohingya refugees and local host communities living in Cox’s Bazar to achieve this by offering a range of specialist technical assistance. facilities.

While resources and attention from common centers were diverted to COVID-19, one of the main goals of this year’s evaluation was to understand how the task was able to help agencies and communities during the pandemic. A mixed-methods study was conducted in January 2020. , adding a representative survey of Rohingya and host communities, in other camps and upazilas. Qualitative studies were also conducted with these network members, as well as with humanitarian professionals and volunteers.

The assessment found that the joint service has been instrumental in informing the Rohingya about COVID-19. Getting data in the right places, in the right language, and in the right format also played a vital role. The joint service will now have to work with partners to ensure men and seniors have access to the information they need despite COVID-19 restrictions.
