“We’re all united now.” What the UAE-Israel Agreement means for Palestinians

The wonderful agreement between the United Arab Emirates and Israel, in which they agreed to normalize diplomatic relations in exchange for Israel’s suspension of its plans to annex parts of the West Bank, not well won by the Palestinians. The so-called “Abraham Agreement” makes the United Arab Emirates the third country in the Arab world, after Egypt and Jordan, to recognize the State of Israel, and others would possibly follow soon.

Many Palestinians see it as a betrayal. “This is a stab in the back of the Palestinian people,” Mustafa Barghouti, a member of the Central Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization, told WPR. He called the agreement a “violation of the Arab Peace Initiative,” through the Arab League, first backed in 2002, which completes ties with Israel in Israel’s withdrawal from the occupied Palestinian territory.
