SINGAPORE: COVID-19 cases have increased over the past month in Singapore, mainly due to the Omicron XBB subvariant, with infections expected to peak in mid-November.
The republic’s fitness ministry said it was closely monitoring the wave’s trajectory and had taken steps to ensure Singapore’s physical care capacity remained protected.
“In Singapore, XBB is now the main subvariant circulating in the community, accounting for 54% of local instances during the week of October 3-9, up from 22% last week,” he said here.
The ministry said the dominant subvariant in the past, BA. 5, is now estimated at 21% of local cases, while the BA. 2. 75 subvariant is estimated at 24% of cases.
The ministry noted that there is evidence that XBB can lead to a build-up of reinfections.
“The rate of reinfections among the total number of COVID-19 cases in Singapore has increased over the past month, with reinfections recently accounting for around 17, which corresponds to the percentage of new cases overall,” he said.
Since immunity to herbal infections in the population is very likely to decline over time, “this highlights the importance of ensuring a minimum level of ions through vaccination and keeping them up-to-date to avoid serious infections,” he added.
The ministry said the backlog of hospitalized cases in the republic also remains proportional to the accumulation in the total number of cases.
“More importantly, the number of severe cases has remained low,” he said.
Yesterday, the ministry said the number of hospitalized cases, requiring supplemental oxygen and in the intensive care unit (ICU), 562, 44 and nine respectively, up from 365, 37 and thirteen a week ago.
According to the information, it expects “the XBB infection wave to peak in mid-November 2022. “
“Using the BA. 5 wave as an indication, hospitalized cases peaked at 800 in July 2022. Our hospitals, stretched, were able to cope with the numbers,” the ministry said.
He said the Omicron XBB subvariant was first detected in August 2022 in India and has since been detected in more than 17 countries, plus Australia, Bangladesh, Denmark, India, Japan and the United States.
“While observations from countries where XBB has been reported to be at least as transmissible as the variants circulating lately, there is no evidence that XBB causes more severe disease,” he said.
