The engineering, procurement and structure (EPC) functions of the Wärtsilä generation organization have obviously been demonstrated with 3 deliveries of recent assignments in Brazil, which were effectively completed in record time. The orders were placed in the fourth quarter of 2021 through TEVISA, Linhares Geração and Povoação Energia, joint-stock companies controlled by budget through BTG Pactual Asset Management.
The urgency of the final touches resulted from the desire to meet the required date of operation of announcements of the power plants, in accordance with the regulations of the reserve capacity auction, which was organized through the Ministry of Mines and Energy of Brazil in October 2021. From the signing of the contract for the start of the advertising operation, the time generally required for each assignment would be approximately 14 months. In this case, however, Wärtsilä finished all 3 assignments in less than 8 months. The construction of the buildings until commissioning took only 3 months, and the equipment was delivered in the current quarter of 2022, the 3 floors were already in operation until July 2022.
Thanks to Wärtsilä’s ability to meet strict deadlines, the visitor was able to fully meet the needs of the Brazilian Power Authority’s Power Purchase Agreement. The electrical energy produced through these plants will be fed into the national grid, ensuring the reliability of the system.
“We are incredibly pleased with Wärtsilä’s power and reliability to finish everything on time, despite an exceptionally tight schedule. They overcame all the demanding situations involved and, together with our team, did a first-class job. Your reputation in Brazil for being a trusted spouse with exceptional EPC functions is well deserved,” said Marcelo Oliveira, CEO of TEVISA, Linhares Geração and Povoação Energia.
“Completing those projects on time required all of our experience and knowledge. Our strong existing presence in Brazil and our understanding of local desires and practices have been key to making expedited deliveries a success. We use more labor and more structure machinery on site. , and worked two shifts, seven days a week. I think we have sent a transparent message to the power sector about Wärtsilä’s capabilities,” commented Jorge Alcaide, Director, South America, Wärtsilä Energy.
Among the many difficulties encountered are the difficulties of maritime congestion resulting from logistical blockades and the Covid 19 pandemic, and the war in Ukraine that affected the availability of aircraft. Wärtsilä was able to meet those challenges, for example, in particular chartering a ship to deliver apparatus and materials, and a significant number of air shipment deliveries to ensure everything was on site when needed.
The 3 floors are components of 3 separate projects, all in the state of Espirito. The Luiz Oscar Rodrigues joint venture plant in Melo and the Povoaҫ ӑo1 joint venture plant are in the city of Linhares, and the Viana 1 joint venture plant in the city of Viana. The projects are powered by Wärtsilä 34SG fuel engines, a total of 16 engines with a combined capacity of about 150 MW, enough to supply electricity to some 280,000 families in the region.
To date, Wärtsilä’s record EPC deliveries include 551 power plants in 109 countries. Its total production is close to 21,720 MW. For each assignment, express wishes must be met, as well as compliance with the rules, fear for the environment and the well-being of local communities. Wärtsilä has evolved a flexible technique for other demands, providing the visitor with a point of contact to ensure effective management of assignments, while making full use of the latest virtual technologies and data systems.
Wärtsilä has been provided in Brazil since 1990 and operates in Rio de Janeiro and Manaus. To date, Wärtsilä has delivered 2. 9 GW of power plant capacity to Brazil, of which more than 700 MW are most recently through Wärtsilä’s long-term service agreements. Wärtsilä has also switched more than 275 MW of oil-based capacity in the country to run on herbal gas.
