UNDATED (WJON News) — Anglers fishing in Lac Mille Lacs won’t be left with any walleye this summer.
The Department of Natural Resources and the Ojibwe Band of a Thousand Lakes have established a catch-and-release fishing season from May 11 to August 15. The purpose is to begin allowing a leucoma to be between 21 and 23 inches or a leucoma to be larger than 28 inches. on August 16.
MNR says that despite poor ice conditions, fishermen caught plenty of walleye beyond the fall and winter. Officials say the bite is strong because of the small number of fish feeding.
This year’s agreement reduces the total walleye harvest by 10% to 2023 figures.
Open water catch limits have been announced for Upper Red Lake.
MNR says that starting May 11, anglers will be required to keep 3 zander trees, of which only one is larger than 17 inches. Starting June 15, the limit will increase to 4 fish per day.
Due to a record winter harvest, the government decided that a more conservative catch limit was needed early in the season to ensure the long-term fitness of the fishery and a good winter harvest.
