(BRIEF) Vodafone and Nokia have effectively concluded a three-month Open RAN trial in the Alpine towns of Arcisate and Sernio, Italy, leveraging an independent live 5G (5G SA) verification network. The test showed impressive results, reaching gigabit download speeds. up to 1. 1 Gbps and a 160 Mbps uplink, with functionality comparable to 5G RAN. Key pieces included Nokia’s AirScale Massive MIMO radios and RAN software running on Dell’s advertising hardware servers (COTS). The trial underlines Vodafone’s commitment to fostering a diverse ecosystem for Open RAN and Nokia’s anyRAN approach, aimed at offering more flexibility, choice and functionality in Open RAN solutions.
(PRESS RELEASE) BERKSHIRE, May 1, 2024 – /EuropaWire/ – Vodafone and Nokia have announced the successful finishing touch of a three-month Open RAN trial on a standalone 5G (5G SA) test network live in the towns of Arcisate and Sernio on the outskirts of the Alps in northern Italy.
The Open RAN antennas at those sites were connected to Vodafone’s main control center on Vodafone’s high-speed, high-capacity 5G SA network in Milan, which also uses Nokia technology.
Gigabit speeds
In the test, Vodafone and Nokia achieved functional and functionality effects comparable to 5G RAN, adding mobile data download speeds of up to 1. 1 Gbps and an uplink of 160 Mbps. Engineers at Vodafone and Nokia also achieved encouraging effects in other areas, adding latency. (response time).
At the heart of the test were Nokia’s AirScale Massive MIMO radios (a generation suitable for connecting many users in busy urban areas) and Nokia’s first RAN software implementation running on Dell’s Advertising Hardware Servers (COTS) using Red Hat’s cloud infrastructure. Also included is Nokia’s clever network control formula, MantaRay, to provide Vodafone with a consolidated view of the network to ensure advanced traffic monitoring and control. It is a component of all ad networks that handle visitor traffic.
Diverse Ecosystem
Santiago Tenorio, Director of Network Architecture at Vodafone, said: “Vodafone is committed to supporting the progression and adoption of Open RAN around the world by fostering a diverse ecosystem of partners and solutions. This offers many benefits, adding greater options and improved power. efficiency, increased network capacity, and improved functionality for customers.
The test also highlighted the maturity of Nokia’s anyRAN approach, designed to give cellular operators and enterprises more flexibility when building automated, multi-vendor networks. The ability to combine software and hardware from other vendors is the foundation of Open RAN and is key to driving chain innovation and resilience.
More Choices
Mark Atkinson, Head of RAN at Nokia, added: “Nokia’s anyRAN collaborative technique enables telecom providers to implement Open RAN with the server hardware and CaaS layer of their choice. Together with our ecosystem partners, we’re committed to providing our consumers with more choice and impressive functionality in the Open RAN responses they’ll see in other RAN vendors.
In addition, Nokia supports Open Fronthaul in addition to its high-functionality RAN software that ensures cellular operators have consistent functionality with their existing RAN.
The trial is a further step in Vodafone’s strategy to roll out Open RAN widely across Europe, with the aim of having 30% of its masts based on this generation by 2030. It builds on Vodafone’s deployment of Open RAN sites in the UK and Romania. With key strategic providers such as Nokia, Vodafone is pioneering the wider adoption of open, disaggregated and automated networks, offering greater agility to adopt and temporarily launch new cutting-edge, customer-centric services.
