A team of researchers from the University of São Paulo in Brazil set out to determine whether vitamin D3 supplementation can help reduce the length of hospital stay in severe Covid-19 patients.
Researchers found that vitamin D3 intake was effective in expanding grades of 25-hydroxyvitamin D. However, it did not decrease the length of stay in the hospital or produce other clinically applicable effects compared to a placebo.
For the study, in the journal medRxiv, the team conducted a multicenter, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial at two centers and analyzed 240 patients hospitalized in Covid-19 who were seriously ill.
In the randomized trial, patients assigned a single oral dose of 200,000 IU of vitamin D3 or a placebo.
The team found that of the 240 randomized patients, vitamin D supplementation at particularly higher serum levels via 25-hydroxyvitamin D versus placebo.
The supplement levels the highest serum vitamin D in 86. 7% of patients, at 11% in the placebo group.
The researchers noted: “There were no adjustments to the health-related laboratory markers after the procedure. Vitamin D3 supplementation was well tolerated and no serious adverse occasions were reported in the trial. “
However, vitamin D3 supplementation is useless during hospital stay or any other final clinical outcome in patients hospitalized with severe Covid-19.
“So this trial does not help the use of vitamin D3 supplements as an adjuvant remedy for covid-19 patients,” the team concluded.
