TotalEnergies and Veolia (Paris:VIE) have signed an agreement to commission the structure of the largest solar photovoltaic (PV) formula that will power a desalination plant in Oman, in the city of Sur. The plant will be on the site of the Sharqiyah desalination plant, which is a benchmark in Oman and the Gulf region, supplying drinking water to more than 600,000 inhabitants of the Sharqiyah region.
This 17 megawatt peak (MWp) solar allocation will be the first of its kind to be installed in the region. It will produce more than 30,000 megawatt hours (MWh) of green electric power per year, more than a third of the desalination plant’s daily consumption. , which will allow it to emit about 300,000 tons of CO2.
This is in line with Oman’s national energy strategy to convert 30% of its electricity consumption into renewable resources by 2030. The plant will feature more than 32,000 high-efficiency solar panels and will use a state-of-the-art east-west tracking formula to accumulate energy consumption. production. It will cover a domain of 130,000 square meters, that of about 18 football fields.
“At Veolia we are committed to driving the ecological transformation of the water sector for our consumers and for our own assets. We are pleased to debut the solar power plant structure of our desalination unit in the town of Sur, to obtain it with green electritown while drastically reducing its carbon footprint,” said Estelle Brachlianoff, CEO of Veolia. As one of the key players in Oman’s water sector, Veolia is fully committed to supporting the sustainability goals of Oman’s Vision 2040 for communities in the Sultanate. and industries, and our sun task with TotalEnergies is going in this direction. “
“This allocation is part of our strategy to expand renewable energy in the Middle East and provide our consumers with clean, reliable and affordable energy solutions. We are committed to helping Veolia decarbonize its operations, leveraging our strong experience in deploying renewable energy solutions on highly technical and complex sites. As a global multiple energy company, our purpose is to contribute to the progress of renewable energy in Oman and its region,” said Vincent Stoquart, Senior Vice President of Renewable Energy at TotalEnergies.
Yaqoob Al Kiyumi, Executive Director of Oman Power and Water Procurement OPWP, said: “This initiative adds another attitude to the purpose of having access to safe drinking water in Oman. The use of solar energy as a chosen energy source for the desalination operation contributes to sustainability purposes in Oman. “
Veolia is deploying solutions to optimize the power output of its desalination activities, adding its Sharqiyah desalination plant. The Group, in partnership with TotalEnergies, needs to take a new step towards green transformation by employing renewable energy to force the plant instead of fossil fuels.
TotalEnergies aims to help generating countries build a more sustainable long term through greater use of the country’s natural resources, adding solar energy, which will directly access cleaner, more reliable and affordable electricity. The Company is leveraging its leadership position in the region to expand. large-scale solar energy projects in Qatar, Iraq and Libya. These projects illustrate the sustainable progression style of TotalEnergies, a global multi-power company that supports generating countries in their energy transition.
