Vatican City: Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle has the highest-ranking Vatican official known to have tested positive for coronavirus.
The Vatican said Friday that Tagle, 63, a Filipino who leads the Vatican’s missionary arm, took the test when he arrived in Manila on Thursday.
Tagle, who met personally with Pope Francis on 29 August, tested negative on 7 September.
Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni said Vatican fitness officials were tracking down people who had contacted Tagle in recent days, but he did not say whether that included the 83-year-old Pope, who would be examined.
He Tagle had no symptoms and would move to Manila for quarantine.
The Pope held a series of personal hearings on Thursday and Friday and Wednesday held his weekly in front of a limited crowd of about 500 people.
Only a dozen others tested positive for the virus in the Vatican, and the few people hospitalized with symptoms recovered.
