The NCAA women’s tournament “ugly incident” involving the Utah women’s basketball team last week “raised questions about how the NCAA selects those first-round sites,” which are not closed that Sunday, while the men’s sites , located in unbiased locations, – are selected years in advance, according to AP’s Doug Feinberg. Feinberg noted that the NCAA “has tried some other formats for the early rounds of the tournament” and that the biggest success has been the one in which the top 16 seeds host games. The NCAA followed this format in 2015 after identifying sites at schools for the first two rounds. The format has “noted a massive increase in attendance” over the past three seasons after COVID-19 restrictions were lifted. This year there was a “record 292,456 spectators in the first two rounds”, surpassing the mark of more than 60,000 set last season. Lynn Holzman, NCAA vice president of women’s basketball, said: “We have seen a 27% increase in attendance. There were several sell-outs in the first and second rounds and the momentary market demand reflected this build-up. The variety committee was expected to “review the championship format after the 2025 tournament” and Holzman “has been pushing for some time to bring the review forward to this year. ” Last year, “40 schools were tested to determine which groups could produce the maximum of 16 seeds selected by the NCAA variety committee” (AP, 3/27).
