Usa. US, Russia agree to hold talks on a nuclear treaty for the first time since the war in Ukraine began

The United States and Russia have agreed to hold talks on the exclusive nuclear treaty between the two countries in the near future, State Department spokesman Ned Price said Tuesday.

The New START Treaty limits all intercontinental nuclear weapons deployed through Russia and the United States.

The treaty, the only one left to regulate the world’s two largest nuclear arsenals, was extended for five years in February 2021, the first weeks of Joe Biden’s presidency.

Ask either country to allow the other country to use its nuclear-weapon-related services at the site. These ions were discontinued in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The resumption of ions is expected to be a topic of discussion at upcoming meetings. U. S. officials said.

Diplomatic relations between Russia and the United States are stalled following Russian President Vladimir Putin’s resolution to invade Ukraine with no end in sight to the war, but U. S. officials saw it as a positive progression that Moscow continued to show explicit interest in the treaty, despite Putin’s alarming nuclear threats as the clash continues.

Russia has expressed willingness to talk about extending the treaty and the United States has said negotiations will only take a position once on-site inspections resume.

The complications emerged earlier this year after the U. S. The U. S. tried to resume inspections, but Russia rejected the efforts, bringing up alleged U. S. efforts. The U. S. Department of Appeal to “deprive the Russian Federation of the right to conduct inspections on U. S. territory. “”U. S. ” restrictive measures imposed as a result of Russia’s war against Ukraine are compatible” with the New START Treaty.

Treaty meetings are held on behalf of the Bilateral Advisory Commission, the BCC.

“We have agreed that the BCC will meet in the short or long term under the terms of the New START Treaty. The OCC’s work is confidential, but we look forward to a constructive session,” Price said.

The last time a CCB met was more than a year ago, in October 2021.

The treaty limits the two countries to deploying 1,550 nuclear warheads in delivery systems, intercontinental ballistic missiles, submarine-launched ballistic missiles and bombers.

Last week, CNN reported that Russian military officials discussed how and in what situations Russia would use a tactical nuclear weapon on the battlefield in Ukraine, according to a US intelligence assessment. It was described to CNN through several resources that read it.

The assessment, written through the National Intelligence Council, is not a high-confidence product and is not pure intelligence, but rather an analysis, several other people who read it told CNN. For this reason, some officials said the talks reflected in the document may have been taken out of context and do not necessarily imply that Russia is preparing to use a nuclear weapon.

The United States has yet to see any signs that Putin has to make the drastic decision to use one, the officials said, and Putin does not appear to have been concerned about the discussions outlined in the intelligence assessment.
