WASHINGTON (AP) — The U. S. Commerce Department on Thursday expanded export controls opposing Belarus’ national airline Belavia for offering flights on Boeing planes in violation of restrictions issued after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Companies around the world are now prohibited from retaining, repairing, and otherwise using U. S. parts. The U. S. Navy to retain Belavia’s fleet, according to an order issued against the airline.
Belavia made more than 30 illegal flights on Boeing planes after April 8 to and from Belarus, Russia, Turkey, Moscow, St. Petersburg, Georgia, the United Arab Emirates and Egypt, according to the order.
On April 8, the Commerce Department banned flights on aircraft owned or operated by Belarusians manufactured in the United States or manufactured in a foreign country with more than 25 controlled U. S. content bound for Belarus or Russia.
“Just as Belarus is illegally supporting Russia’s unjust war in Ukraine, its national airline Belavia is complying with our export laws,” Matthew Axelrod, undersecretary of trade for export enforcement, said in a statement.
The order “will prevent Belavia from taking advantage of any U. S. generation. “The U. S. is in the U. S. to run its fleet of aircraft, which will make it harder for the airline to continue flying. “
The order is for Boeing and Embraer planes in Belavia’s fleet, if they want U. S. parts, officials said.
The United States took action against major Russian airlines, adding Aeroflot, Aviastar, Azur Air, Rossiya and Utair, after identifying Boeing planes that were operating in violation of U. S. sanctions.
