Trickbot originally known in 2016 as a Trojan virus derived from the Dyre Trojan virus. Both viruses target monetary knowledge and began targeting non-Russian entities in mid-2014. The identified members of Trickbot have been linked to Russian intelligence. Some notable members include Vitaly Kovalev, Maksim Mikhaillov, Valentin Karyagin and Dmitry Pleshevskiy, among others.
The sanctions aim to freeze the assets and assets of Trickbot members in the United States and prohibit any involvement between members and U. S. citizens. This applies specifically to monetary activities and transactions between U. S. entities and Trickbot members.
