(PRESS RELEASE) HELSINKI, April 2, 2024 — /EuropaWire/ — The application era for the PhD pilot task introduced through the Finnish government and funded through the Ministry of Education and Culture has opened and will end on April 22. At the University of Helsinki there are a total of 236 vacancies in 11 pilot missions or sectoral consortia.
The aim of pilot doctoral education is to enable doctors to complete their doctoral thesis from inception to initial examination during the three-year investment period. The pilot program will create new practices to help graduate on time.
Collaboration is becoming increasingly important
A key detail of the pilot mission is to encourage mobility between universities, companies, think tanks and other organisations, as a significant proportion of graduates will find employment outside the university. Thanks to the collaboration, more and more PhDs have the opportunity to get acquainted with the operations of other partners, business visits and occasions of their PhD studies.
“The demanding situations of modern society require highly qualified specialists. Our goal is to expand doctoral education so that our PhD fellows can respond to these demanding multidisciplinary situations,” says Minna Palander-Collin, Director of the Doctoral School at the University of Helsinki.
Pilot Brings New Opportunities
Vice-Chancellor Anne Portaankorva points out that the pilot task is of a broader package of reform of doctoral education.
“The pilot task of doctoral education introduced through the Finnish government is a step towards modernised research. The pilot task provides us with an excellent opportunity to expand doctoral education practices and support and supervision of doctoral research.
