On June 8, 2023, the United States sent a letter to the Director-General of UNESCO, anticipating its accession to the Organization as of July on the basis of a concrete monetary plan, which includes a commitment to pay its estimated arrears of $619 million.
UNESCO’s 193 member states met Thursday in regular consultation of the General Conference to read about the proposal. On Friday afternoon, they followed the American proposal by a very large majority. All situations are now in position for a full return of the United States. United to UNESCO in July. The United States would fund the equivalent of 22 per cent consistent with the Organization’s normal budget. This will be complemented by the progressive payment of their arrears and, from 2023, voluntary contributions to finance programmes in addition to those supporting schooling in Africa, the Holocaust remembrance. and coverage by journalists.
UNESCO will thus benefit from an increased budget to implement its education, culture, science and data programmes. It will also be to intensify its movements for Africa and gender equality, two of its strategic priorities.
Elected head of the Organization in November 2017, Audrey Azoulay has led mediations to ease political tensions and consensus on the most sensitive issues, such as the Middle East. It had also reformed the Organization to make it more effective.
UNESCO has been so to launch new projects that allow it to fully perceive the demanding situations of today, such as the ethics of synthetic intelligence or the coverage of the oceans. It has also returned to iconic box campaigns, such as the reconstruction of Mosul’s Old City. in Iraq, in line with its historical ambitions.
In a letter to UNESCO’s Director-General in early June, the United States cited those reforms and projects as reasons for its return.
