THE HAYE, Netherlands – The United Arab Emirates said Monday that the United Nations court has no jurisdiction in a case filed in Qatar for “discrimination against citizens of Qatar and Qatar” amid a boycott of 4 Arab countries.
UAE lawyers, judges of the International Court of Justice, will dismiss the case as incompetence.Qatari lawyers must respond on Wednesday.
The United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Egypt and Saudi Arabia severed ties with Qatar on 5 June 2017 and introduced an economic boycott, preventing Qatar Airways flights from leaving its airspace, ending the country’s only land border with Saudi Arabia and preventing their ships from leaving their ports..
They say the crisis comes from Qatar for extremist teams in the region, accusations denied through Doha.
Qatar addressed the world court in 2018, the boycott violated the 1965 International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination.
But Daniel Bethlehem, a lawyer representing the United Arab Emirates, argued that the court was not competent because the terms of the agreement did not cover the dispute between the United Arab Emirates and Qatar and that the war of words had already been resolved at conciliation hearings between the two countries.
The court will hold hearings on the initial objections of the United Arab Emirates to the jurisdiction of the court for 4 days until next Monday.Lawyers and representatives are taking component video links due to coronavirus restrictions.Judges will most likely take weeks or months to make a decision on whether the case can move forward in its entirety.
