The number of Covid-19 instances in the Middle East and North Africa (Mena) region exceeded 1,430,214 on 19 August, according to Worldometer’s knowledge collected through MEED.
GCC countries account for 48.3% of all regional cases, while the largest countries in Mena, Iran, account for 27.4% of the 1.43 million infections.
The United Arab Emirates has the fewest GCC instances (64,906), with 57,909 cures and 366 deaths to date.
On 18 August, Omar al-Hammadi, the official spokesman for the Government of the United Arab Emirates, said that in recent days there had been an increase in concern in the number of cases between citizens.
He also cautioned that they opposed the use of wrongly promoted products for their ability to combat Covid-19 without any clinical basis, and asked to keep precautions when visiting gyms or sports activities.
The United Arab Emirates is also among the fastest economies in the Mena region to resume in the past the activities of the industry halted to curb the spread of Covid-19.
Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates and ruler of Dubai, discussed on 18 August the post-pandemic plans of the Ministry of Economy, which aims to herald the dynamic towards new economic models in intelligent generation and complex science.
On the same day, he announced that P-O Marinas had organized a virtual workshop with the Department of Tourism and Trade and Emirates Airline to discuss the resumption of the 2020/21 cruise season in Dubai.
Precautionary measures and protection protocols for cruise tourism are being developed.
Meanwhile, UAE Minister for Climate Change and environment Abdullah Belhaif al-Nuaimi said the transition to a green economy was for post-pandemic economic recovery in the UAE and beyond.
“Countries around the world are recently developing their recovery plans and we urge them to align their post-coronavirus economic activities with the priority of environmental protection, as climate substitution remains the ultimate existential risk to humanity,” he said.
