UNESCO inscribes medieval Jews in Erfurt, Germany, as a World Heritage Site

BERLIN (AP) — A U. N. committee has designated an organization of medieval Jewish sites in the eastern German city of Erfurt a World Heritage Site. This is the second time Germany’s Jewish heritage has been added to the list in recent years. Among the buildings is the Old Synagogue of Erfurt, a thirteenth-century stone construction depicting Jewish family life in medieval times, as well as a classic ritual bath. The resolution adopted Sunday at a meeting of the United Nations World Heritage Committee in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, under the auspices of UNESCO. Erfurt’s Jewish heritage sites had been largely forgotten until recently. After the pogroms of the fourteenth century, the old synagogue was used as a warehouse and restaurant. Its former importance was not rediscovered and established until 1988.
