Unemployment in Portugal slows, but unemployment is 37% compared to the previous year

LISBON, 20 August (Reuters) – The number of other people registered as unemployed in Portugal increased slightly to 0.2% in July compared to last month, but was 37% higher year-on-year due to the effect of the coronavirus pandemic, the Institute of Employment and Vocational Training said.

Figures released Thursday showed that the rise in unemployment figures slowed sharply, from a monthly increase of 14.1% in April to 4.2% in May and 0.6% in June.

However, the Algarve region, the region hardest hit by the crisis due to its heavy dependence on tourism, continues to suffer the highest unemployment rates, with an accumulation of 216.1% year-on-year in July compared to the same month last year.

The Lisbon metropolitan area, which also lacks the same crowd of guests and struggles to fix its symbol after constantly higher infection counts in June and July, experienced a 51.6% increase year after year

Data from the Institute of National Statistics showed that around 180,000 jobs had disappeared since February, a month before a six-week blockade (report through Victoria Waldersee; edited through Andrei Khalip and Jan Harvey).
