Central station replaces its messy, overflowing bike parking lot with a cheap area hidden out of sight
Beneath the clear waters and exciting boats near Amsterdam Central Station lies a remarkable feat of engineering: an underwater garage for 7000 bicycles.
The garage, which opens on Jan. 26, is the result of a €60 million (€53 million) allocation over four years to clean up piles of rusty motorcycles left on busy commuters and install rows of empty, secure underground parking spaces, where motorcycles can be left loose for 24 hours and then priced at €1. 35 consistent with 24 hours.
A conveyor belt takes you to the exercise station, where more than 200,000 trips begin and end each day. On the port side of IJ there is another new park of 25 million euros for 4,000 more bicycles, built on stilts on a new site in the IJ, a few centimeters from the North-South metro line.
Construction of the underwater garage for motorcycles, documented in a stunning stop-motion video, began in 2019 and involved draining a lake of water near the former 19th-century complex, built on three synthetic islands.
De grootste fietsenstalling ??? van onze stad opent eind januari de deuren. Om de stalling te bouwen moest het water worden weggepompt uit het Open Havenfront. Bekijk ⃣ jaar werk 4️in 6️⃣ ⃣0️seconden. pic. twitter. com/J1GJM6PYmZ
