The collection of world leaders for the annual United Nations General Assembly from 22 to 29 September will place foreign disorders at the forefront of the data cycle. Existing disorders involving tensions between the United States and Iran will in fact make headlines this year, the summit will be largely virtual.
Iran’s media policy and the United Nations General Assembly deserve to rekindle the emphasis on the Iranian government’s continued imprisonment of foreigners and binationals on false charges. Currently, at least six US prisoners languish in Iranian prisons, along with citizens of Australia, the United Kingdom and other countries. These include academics, environmentalists and former UN officials. It is vital that these cases are treated smoothly and that Iranian officials are responsible for these arrests. The following are the backgrounds of the detainees and the points surrounding their arrest and efforts to secure their release:
“H. Res. 752 rightly condemns the Iranian government’s brutal crackdown in November that left many dead in mass protests caused by an end to fuel subsidies. It is that credible voices in Congress condemn serious human rights violations through the Iranian government and call on Iran to comply with its human rights obligations abroad. “
