France accused Amazon of putting “unacceptable” pressure on its staff after unions claimed it refused to pay those who refused to work.
France has reportedly accused US tech multinational Amazon of putting “unacceptable” pressure on its staff after unions claimed the store would pay staff who refused to come to work for fear of contracting the deadly coronavirus. In a radio interview, French Finance Minister Bruno Le Marie only denounced Amazon for “coercing” staff, but also added that the government “will make sure Amazon knows about it. “
According to a foreign news agency, around 200 of the 1,700 employees at Amazon’s fulfillment center near Douai in northern France refused to come in to paint on March 17 and instead exercised their “right to refuse” under the country’s hard labor code. If you are a painter, it poses risks to your health and/or protection. Union resources also reported that almost a portion of the staff also walked off duty on March 18 at Amazon’s factory in Montélimar, in the southeast of the country. The company’s control had indicated that its staff would not receive any pay, as the death toll from the coronavirus reached 372 and inflamed more than 10,900 people in France.
