BALTIMORE — Three years ago, the global lockdown was due to this then-unknown virus.
The World Health Organization has declared COVID-19 a pandemic.
Schools closed, sports were disrupted and others were confined to their homes.
In retrospect, the medical picture full of uncertainty. Thousands of first responders were on the front lines of the pandemic.
WJZ spoke with a fitness expert at the University of Maryland Medical Center, who explained the progress that has been made.
“I can think of user after user and face after face of other people that I would never expect to see in a response like this, who just wanted to participate, wanted to do something,” said Dr. Chuck Callahan, vice president of population. Health at the University of Maryland Medical Center.
We’ve noticed global lockdowns, hospitals at full capacity, masks, social distancing, and strict restrictions.
Dr. Callahan credited Johns Hopkins University for pioneering the COVID-19 dashboard, a key in the fight against the virus.
“Hopkins was uniquely positioned to expand an award-winning dataset, that was all we had in the first weeks and months,” Dr. Callahan said.
Data shows that more than 6. 8 million people have died worldwide from COVID-19, adding up to more than 1. 1 million of the deaths recorded in the United States.
Maryland’s hospitals have evolved to play a central role in treating patients.
“We resumed mass testing, antibody infusions, plus other treatment bureaucracy like Paxlovid and IV remdesivir and resumed vaccinations when the time came,” Dr. Callahan said.
Dr. Callahan said fitness experts have learned a lot, but we’re still out of the woods.
“I think they’re going to tell us some things,” Dr. Callahan said. “COVID is still with us. We still have potential COVID vaccines ahead of us, but I think we’ll be informed of them so we can be a more strongly engaged public fitness nation. “
The World Health Organization has not yet declared an end to the emergency.
