Kiev, Ukraine – An Israeli Hasidic Jew was beaten through local citizens on a pilgrimage to a Ukrainian city, police said on Wednesday.
Ukrainian police said several other people assaulted the pilgrim in a dispute at a store in Uman and said the incident was under investigation.
The pilgrim who attacked has an apartment permit in Ukraine, according to the United Jewish Community of Ukraine.
Ouman is home to the tomb of a vital Hasidic rabbi, Rabbi Najman of Breslov, and tens of thousands of pilgrims stop in the city every September to commemorate Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year.Some had arrived in Ukraine before their borders ended.last week amid an increase in COVID-19 infections.
There have been sporadic incidents involving pilgrims and citizens in recent years.
