Ukraine’s nuclear company warns of hydrogen and radioactive leaks after damage to Zaporizhzhia plant

UKRAINE RESTORES POWER AT ZAPORIZHZHIA NUCLEAR POWER PLANT AMID PHOTOS, WATCHDOG WARNS SAFETY REMAINS A MAJOR ISSUE

Bombings in or near the ZNPP have threatened Ukraine’s nuclear security in recent weeks, and officials have warned that damage to Europe’s largest nuclear power plant may cause a bigger crisis than the Chernobyl crisis in 1986.

Earlier this week, two of the plant’s reactors were disconnected from the power grid when the power lines went through bombardment and emergency cover systems were activated.

Ukrainian staff, who have continued to operate the site despite Russian profession since March, would repair a “main power supply source” to the plant on Saturday and reconnect it to the Ukrainian power grid.

NUCLEAR POWER PLANT IN RUSSIAN-OCCUPIED UKRAINE TEMPORARILY CUTS OFF POWER GRID

Ukraine and Russia have blamed others for the damage to the nuclear power plant, but Kyiv and the foreign network have argued that the risk of a nuclear disaster persists as long as Russian forces continue to occupy Ukraine’s nuclear power plant.

“Due to the presence of the Russian army, weapons, apparatus and explosives in the power plant, there are serious dangers to the operation of the ZNPP,” Energoatom said on Saturday.

The nuclear firm said Russian forces had “increased pressure” on the Ukrainian workers’ corps operating the site “to prevent them from revealing evidence of the crimes of the plant’s occupants and its use as a military base. “

On Saturday, reports began to emerge that Russian troops had “tortured” workers at the plant before a shutdown at the International Atomic Energy Agency as the UN sought to protect the site.

“Ukraine calls on the global network to take immediate steps to force Russia to release the ZNPP and move the power plant to our country for the sake of everyone’s security,” Energoatom said.
