Since the February invasion, Ukraine and Russia have used landmines in 4 regions: Donetsk, Kharkiv, Kyiv and Sumy.
Human Rights Watch says there is no way to quantify the casualties or humanitarian impact of landmine use since the war began.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has introduced an initiative called UNITED24 to attract donations from around the world. The budget raised through the initiative enabled Ukraine to purchase an Armtrac 400 for the Kharkiv region, which is no longer occupied but remains infected by mines.
The demining vehicle evolved and was manufactured through Armtrac, founded near Cambridge, England.
Robin Swanson of Armtrac told Insider that Ukraine first expressed it on the device in April.
He sent to Poland in September and transferred to Ukraine earlier this month. Managing Director Stephen Brown traveled to Ukraine to practice around seven operators.
The vehicle will be driven by a sapper, a soldier who performs army engineering responsibilities such as breaking fortifications, demolishing, building bridges, laying or clearing mineboxes, box defenses, and road and airbox construction and repair.
The Armtrac 400’s 3-meter hydraulic rotor can clean 2,400 square meters in an hour and neutralize explosives at an intensity of 21 inches. The vehicle can cope with anti-tank mines of up to 22 pounds.
It can be controlled from a distance of up to 800 meters for operator safety, or from inside the armored and soundproof cab.
The Armtrac spokesman said the device works with two types of rotating equipment: the front shooting bar or the flail.
Both detonate landmines or neutralize them by separating the fuse from the larger charge. The selection of toolboxes according to the terrain situations to be cleared.
The demining device was purchased for $491,808.
