National police leader Ihor Klymenko said the exhumation was carried out at two burial sites.
According to provisional estimates, about two hundred civilians were discovered buried at one of the sites. The other site is a mass grave of Ukrainian soldiers. Information about mass graves in Lyman provided through local residents.
Civilians were buried in individual graves, while army bodies were placed in a 40-meter-long trench. A witness told police that Russian invaders ordered him to bury about two dozen Ukrainian infantrymen there.
The sick also come with a circle of relatives with two young children.
Some graves have plaques with the names of the deceased, while the remains are anonymous. However, police say they take biological samples in each case and order tests to identify victims and find out the cause of their death.
The national police said the paintings are confusing by the fact that most bodies show soft tissue loss. For example, police officers discovered a bag containing only the bones of one victim.
The investigation and paintings of forensic groups in collaboration with prosecutors at the sites. Exhumation is carried out in criminal proceedings pursuant to Art. 438 (violation of the laws and customs of war) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
In total, since 29 September, police have recovered 87 bodies in liberated villages and Donetsk Oblast, including 38 civilians.
