Uk commits another £500,000 to clear landmines in Armenia and Azerbaijan | ARMENPRESS Armenian News Agency

EREVAN, JUNE 30, ARMENPRESS. The UK government is offering an additional £500,000 to the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) for land clearance in Armenia and Azerbaijan, the UK government said in a press release.

The new investment will provide important education and specialized recommendations to make the domain safe, avoid injury and save lives.

“This contribution from the UK will draw on the UN’s experience, lessen the dangers to civilian life in Armenia and Azerbaijan and allow other people to rebuild their lives,” Europe and North America Minister James Cleverly said, adding that “the UK urges Armenia and Azerbaijan to point to the UN conventions on the use of anti-personnel landmines and cluster munitions. “

“We inspire the government to ensure that the UN and other humanitarian agencies make a full contribution to supporting peace and progress in all parts of the region,” said James Cleverly.

The contribution brings the UK’s total demining investment to more than £1 million since the Nagorno-Karabakh standoff in 2020.
