UCSD lands COVID-19 vaccine clinical trial in National City

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – UC San Diego received a transient use from National City City City Council to use El Toyon Park for a clinical vaccination trial.

He is valid from September 16 to October 31, 2022, with a rental fee of $5,000 consistent with the month.

A spokesman for UCSD Health said it would be intended for Janssen’s clinical trial, which is still awaiting final approval at the local level; No more main points may be shown on Friday.

The vaccination clinic would be in a parking lot in National City Park, one of the communities most affected by COVID-19.

Community advocates worked with UCSD to inform South Bay participants about vaccine trials.

“The Chicana Federation has worked with many of our under-neglected communities, but also with some of the communities most affected by COVID-19, especially Latin American communities,” said Roberto Alcantar, Director of Strategy of the Chicana Federation. “One of the existing challenges that emerges is the challenge of vaccines. “

Alcantar said that considerations had been raised about another trial that was scheduled to begin in the South Bay before this month; It was then put on hold, but UCSD temporarily worked with the federation to make sure citizens in the verification spaces were getting the data they needed to make informed decisions if they wanted to participate.

“We are pleased to see that UCSD is taking the lead in National City, and it’s not a group, because we know they’re doing everything they can to provide the right information,” he said. “If there are ongoing trials that are unethical or target other people of color with incentives, we will report them. “

UCSD researchers had stated in the past that they hoped to focus on recruiting others for trials in marginalized communities with the highest COVID-19 rate.

The San Diego Latino Health Coalition, which includes the Chicana Federation and several other nonprofit organizations, will continue its network outreach efforts before the formal start of the test.

“We are very effective at dissecasting information, and other people are receptive to us because they accept how true they are with us, they know us, we’ve been working with them for decades,” Alcantar said.

It is not known when the trial will begin, however, 3 clinical trials may soon be underway and two will be concentrated mainly in South Bay.
