Biden’s leadership announced Wednesday that it will resume at-home Covid testing for American families on Monday as the virus takes hold across the country.

Americans will soon be able to use COVIDtests. gov to request 4 loose tests, the directorate said in a statement.

The government had been providing loose check kits through this platform since January 2022, but the site stopped taking orders on June 1 this year to conserve the check stock.

The government is restarting the program in time for the fall and winter, when the virus spreads to higher levels. Covid hospitalizations have already been on the rise for 8 weeks in a row, an increase basically due to new strains of the virus.

But the Biden administration has signaled that the at-home tests expected to be conducted will find recently circulating Covid variants. The kits are ready to use through the end of 2023 and will come with commands on how others can check if a test expiration date has been extended, the directorate added.

Testing is a critical protective tool as Covid infections rise again. But lab-based PCR tests, the classic method of detecting Covid, are more expensive and less available to some Americans since the U. S. government ended the public fitness emergency in May.

The end of this has also replaced the way public and private insurers cover at-home tests, potentially leaving other people unable to get those tests for free through their plans. But some local fitness clinics and websites still offer free trials. at-home tests to the public.

Also on Wednesday, Biden’s leadership announced it would provide $600 million to bolster the production capacity of 12 Covid check brands across the country. The directorate expects to unload about two hundred million checks from those companies.

“These critical investments will increase production levels of immediate at-home COVID-19 testing in our country and mitigate the spread of the virus,” Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra said in a statement.
