The U.S. fitness leader on Wednesday expressed skepticism about Russia’s statement to expand the world’s first coronavirus vaccine, pointing to a lack of knowledge from his initial trials.
Moscow said Tuesday that its vaccine had “sustainable immunity” opposed to the virus, but Western scientists had already expressed considerations about the rate of progression of Russian treatments, suggesting that researchers were taking shortcuts.
U.S. Health Secretary Alex Azar echoed Wednesday’s considerations at the conclusion of a three-day trip to Taiwan.
“It is vital that we provide effective vaccines and that knowledge is transparent … This is not a race to be the first,” he told reporters in a convention call.
“I note that two of the six U.S. vaccines we invested in entered phase 3 of clinical trials a few weeks ago, when the Russian vaccine is just beginning,” he added.
“Data from initial (vaccine) trials in Russia have been revealed, they are transparent.”
Russian President Vladimir Putin said the vaccine was in and one of his daughters had won a dose.
The vaccine called “Sputnik”, in honor of the world’s first synthetic satellite that helped the Soviet Union take the lead in the Cold War area race in 1957.
Governments are under great pressure to locate a vaccine opposed to coronavirus, which has killed more than 700,000 people internationally and has eviscerated the global economy since it gave the impression that it was overdue in central China last year.
The United States is the most affected country, with approximately 5.1 million infections and more than 163,000 deaths.
President Donald Trump is facing a difficult war to be re-elected in November, Joe Biden’s rival in polls as anger over his administration’s reaction to the pandemic increases.
Azar said he was confident that Americans would have a vaccine.
“We think it’s very credible that we’ll have tens of millions of standard, safe and effective vaccine doses by the end of this year, and several hundred million doses early next year,” he said.
Trump has introduced “Operation Warp Speed,” which aims to develop, manufacture and distribute a coronavirus vaccine to all Americans through January 2021.
To date, Washington has distributed at least $9.4 billion to seven vaccine developers and signed production contracts with five of them to supply 700 million doses.
Azar’s trip to Taiwan, the highest-level U.S. ladder since Washington transferred diplomatic popularity to Beijing in 1979, presented itself as an opportunity to learn about the island’s good luck in virus control.
Taiwan reported fewer than 500 infections and seven coVID-19 deaths.
