The United States will require travelers arriving from China to provide a negative Covid-19 result starting Jan. 5, federal fitness officials said Wednesday.
Passengers traveling to the United States from China, Hong Kong and Macau will need to take a flight no more than two days in advance and provide the effects to their airline before boarding.
The announcement by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) comes after Beijing’s relaxation of its “zero covid” policy led to an immediate surge in infections.
The new requirement follows measures by Italy, Japan, India and Taiwan.
The rule will apply to all passengers over the age of two, the CDC said. PCP and antigen tests performed or supervised by a physician will be accepted.
It applies to travellers arriving from transit stopovers in third countries such as Vancouver, Seoul and Toronto.
Italian officials announced that more than a portion of passengers arriving in Milan on two flights from China had been tested for covid on Wednesday.
The CDC said it enforced the new requirement due to the “lack of sufficiently good and transparent data” released through Chinese authorities.

“The foreign network is involved in the ongoing outbreaks of COVID-19 in China and the lack of transparent data,” US officials told CNBC in a statement. “Without this data, it becomes difficult for public health officials to ensure that they will be able to identify potential new variants and take quick action to slow the spread. “
China began easing its strict coronavirus policies earlier this month after a large public outcry sparked widespread social unrest.
Since then, the number of cases has skyrocketed, and the government has reported thousands of new cases in recent days, according to the New York Times.
After following a “zero covid” policy for the past three years, Beijing also announced that it would remove quarantine for travelers arriving in the country from January 8.
The Lunar New Year, which begins on January 22, is the busiest tourist season in China.
