Though the name of the client and the cancer treatment it produces is confidential, Rentschler Biopharma’s Tom Roberts says this is just the first in a new wave of business in Milford for the 150-year-old company.
Rentschler Biopharma, a contract progression and drug production organization founded in Laupheim, Germany, has acquired its U. S. headquarters. UU. de Shire PLC in 2019 as a single-product production and has since built its U. S. subsidiary to house the production of complex molecules on a foreign scale. biopharmaceutical customers.
In December, Rentschler Biopharma announced the finishing touches on a 22,000-square-foot production facility at its Maple Street location. This corporation said that this is the largest expansion phase in its history, doubling its global capacity.
“We need to fill the capacity of our new facilities,” said Roberts, who was hired in September as president of Rentschler Biopharma and general manager for the United States.
The new facility includes 4 bioreactors capable of producing protein-based treatments for European and American customers.
“It gives our consumers the flexibility” to manufacture their products in the U. S. , Roberts added.
Roberts, an industry veteran, has spent the last 15 years of his career leading startups whose goal is to find new remedies for life, he said. He still serves on the board of directors of Texas-based start-up Vitanova Biomedical.
Rentschler Biopharma specializes in biopharmaceutical, mobile and genetic treatment treatments for serious diseases. He helped make an mRNA vaccine against COVID-19 early in the pandemic. In addition to Milford and Germany, the company has operations in the United Kingdom.
Milford is an ideal location as an extension of the Greater Boston biopharmaceutical center that provides a professional workforce, Roberts said. With about 200 workers in Milford today, Roberts said Rentschler, a mid-sized biopharmaceutical company, will “absolutely increase our headcount to meet the desires of those customers,” in 2024 and beyond.
“Our challenge now is to get ahead of the curve,” Roberts said.
The Milford expansion follows several years of rapid growth for Rentschler Biopharma, which employs about 1,400 people worldwide. Also in September, the company named Benedikt von Braunmuehl as its CEO. At the time, von Braunmuehl said Rentschler Biopharma was poised to fill a niche for biopharma companies.
“The need for an experienced and reliable partner like Rentschler Biopharma, which can cover highly specialized industry demands in bioprocess development through to commercial manufacturing, is only going to grow,” von Braunmuehl said in the press release announcing him as CEO.
The City of Milford has granted Rentschler Biopharma a tax break to build Rentschler Biopharma’s new production facility, a program aimed in part at creating jobs. The 12-year tax accrual funding agreement will generate $1. 2 million in tax savings for the company.
The new manufacturing facility is expected to be operational in the second half of 2024, the company said.
CORRECTION: A previous edition of this article incorrectly stated that Rentschler Biopharma had 1,300 workers. A more recent count puts the total number of workers at 1,400.
