Vitali Shkliarov, a US citizen who was detained in Belarus for 3 months, was released on Wednesday and returned to the United States.

Mr. Shkliarov, who holds U. S. and Belarusian citizenship, was arrested this summer in a circle of relatives where he stopped and has been accused of assisting in the formation of illegal meetings.

He criticized Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko before the August presidential election, prompting waves of protests and riots. Mr. Shkliarov is a political representative in the United States and has worked on campaigns for Bernie Sanders and Barack Obama.

“After three months of unwarranted detention and space arrest, Mr. Shkliarov met with his circle of relatives and arrived in the United States,” Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said in a statement.

“As the president and I have made clear,” he continued, “we will tolerate foreign governments improperly detaining American citizens. “
