Two Nigerians have been arrested through men from the Nigerian police cybercrime unit, Abuja, INTERPOL and the National Central Office for their participation in a COVID-19 scam and fraud to a German company of 14.7 million euros.
Nigerian police said on a Sunday that the two men, Babatunde Adesanya, 50, also known as Teddy and Akinpelu Hassan Abass, 41, were arrested after receiving reports that they were members of a complicated transnational criminal organization that defrauded a Freiherr Fredrick Von Hahn, representative of the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia.
According to the statement, the two men specialized in identity theft, cyberbullying, corporate cloning, among other cybercrime, to defraud unsuspecting audiences around the world.
Nigerian police say: “Nigerian Police Cybercrime Unit INTERPOL, the National Central Office, Abuja, has arrested two suspects for their complicity in a multi-million euro primary scam. The scam is about acquiring COVID-19 (EPI) non-public protective equipment.
The suspects, Babatunde Adesanya, also known as Teddy, 50, with a master’s degree in mobile biology, and Akinpelu Hassan Abass, 41, MD Musterpoint Investment Limited, who are members of a complicated transnational network of criminals, cloned ILBN Holdings BV’s company, The Netherlands to prosecute and defraud Freiherr Fredrick Von Hahn, representative of the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia.
“The arrest of the suspects followed a mutual legal aid treaty (MLAT) won through the Federation Attorney General’s Office and the Minister of Justice by transmitting a request from the German government to investigate a fraudulent transaction on the acquisition of COVID-19 Non-public apparatus connected to a Nigerian bank account.
“Discreet investigations through INTERPOL Nigeria have revealed that suspects and their cohorts in the Netherlands, Eduardus Boomstra and Geradius Maulder have specialized in identity theft, cyberbullying, cloning corporate websites, among other cyber misdeeds to defraud unsuspecting members of the world.
In this case, the suspects fraudulently received from Mr Freiherr Fredrick Von Hahn the sum of EUR 1.5 million and another EUR 880,000 in advance of the source of the COVID-19 14.7 million euro PPE.
“Concerned about the non-arrival of the EPP, Mr. Freiherr Fredrick Von Hahn nevertheless went to ILBN Holdings BV’s headquarters in the Netherlands to ask about the reasons for the withholding tax at the source of the articles, only to note that the company had never done business with him and that the transaction was a scam.
“As a result, he reported the case of fraud to police in the Netherlands, which led to the arrest of Eduardus Boomstra and Geradius Maulder in the Netherlands and investigations in Nigeria.
“An investigation through INTERPOL Extra Nigeria revealed that Babatunde Adesanya earned 498,000 euros from Eduardus Boomstra and Geradius Maulder in his Citibank London account and transferred it to an account number domiciled at a Lagos branch of a leading Advertising Bank in Nigeria owned by Musterpoint Investment Nig.Ltd.
“During this time, suspects will soon be brought to justice in a competent court.”
