Twitter is investigating why some workers in Europe got their November pay at the right time amid deep cuts and layoffs at the company since Elon Musk’s inauguration.
Twitter in the UK got an email just before 1pm. the UK and Germany do not appear to have been paid on time.
“It has come to our attention that some of you may not have yet earned your November 2022 salary in your bank account,” reads an email sent to current and former staff. “Payments were made through our Twitter bank account and, as usual, without replacing in the process. “
The email says this “could be a delay in interbank settlement,” but adds that the company is “making an active investment [sic] with our bank and will keep you informed. “
Four independent appeals in the UK and Germany told Ars Technica they got paid the morning their salaries were due.
The resources included existing and former employees, who will be paid according to the terms of their release from the company.
Typically, Twitter staff are paid on the 28th of each month. If the day falls on a Monday, staff usually see their salary as an outstanding payment on Friday, and the money returns to their accounts on Saturday.
While staff in the UK and Germany have not been paid, those in the Netherlands and Ireland have been, suggesting that the challenge is one of staffing and functioning, rather than a systematic refusal to pay workers. “The company is simply not well managed,” said a concerned former UK staff member.
A former Twitter worker shared screenshots of his bank accounts that looked like his unpaid salary had led to an overdraft. The former staff member is also responsible for company expenses incurred while working there. We’re going to check to save your job,” the former worker said. Direct debits begin to be domiciled in a practically empty account.
“I am ashamed to have trusted the words of senior managers who have now earned their money and enjoy it with joy, while the rest of us suffer like this. This is a very harsh way to push other people to quit than to wait for their severance packages.
At noon UK time, some staff members reported being paid with an atypical pay reference of how Twitter would regularly pay their salaries: one former worker estimated that around 80% of staff had not been paid by around 1:00pm. m. , UK time, according to the conversations held. in a Slack organization that contains past and current staff.
A former staff member shared a screenshot with Ars showing a payment made and then canceled this morning. Another former Twitter worker said “at least 20 people” had to call their loan providers due to lack of budget because their salary didn’t arrive. on time.
As of 6 p. m. UK time, some in the UK had yet to be paid, according to those who had access to the group. Some won an email suggesting that receiving banks were subject to anti-fraud controls.
Others reported that the invoices came from other banks that Twitter would not use to pay salaries, contrary to Twitter’s previous claims to staff that “as usual, no replacement in the process. “
Twitter did not respond to a request for comment on the story. It is not known whether communications are still contracted after the layoffs.
